Search Results

After a search is conducted, items appear in clusters.  Clustered are based on matching title and author fields.  Items of various formats, years, and publishers can be clustered together if their title and author match.  A list of formats and quantity of items in each format appears below the cover.

If items are not grouped together, it is because there is a difference in the title and/or author field.  For example, the inclusion or exclusion of a subtitle will prevent the items from being grouped in one cluster.

Sometimes, differences between clusters are very minor, or not readily visible in the Commonwealth Catalog format.

Action Buttons

Clustered items in search results have Action Buttons.  Hover the mouse over a cover to view.

  • Request This Item - if there is only one version of the item in the cluster.  This takes the patron directly to a request form.
  • View Details - if there is more than one version of the item in the cluster.  This takes the patron to a list of items to choose from.

Viewing Results Options

Search results are available in three different view options: Gallery, List, and Grid.

The Commonwealth Catalog defaults to the Gallery View.  Both patrons and staff can change the view option at any time by clicking the “View as” icons in the upper right side of the search.

 Gallery View

The Commonwealth Catalog defaults to the Gallery View.  This view uses cover images when available and displays only information about the format and quantity of items in clusters.

List view

The list view displays some additional information for each cluster, including the range of publication years, and some publisher information.  Fewer clusters are visible at one time in this view.  This view is similar to a more traditional library catalog view.

Grid view

The Grid View can be displayed with or without jacket art.  Simply check or uncheck the box labeled ‘Show Jacket Art’ to select your preference.  This view displays the clusters in text-based lists with the same information as the Gallery View.

Grid View without jacket art

Using the Grid View without jacket art fits the most item clusters onto the page at any one time.  Though it is less enticing for browsing.
